With the roar of the Britain’s Got Talent crowd still ringing in his ears and the tears of joy still streaming from his wife’s eyes, we caught up with saxophonist Julian Smith, to learn a bit more about the man who reduced a room full of people to tears simply by playing his sax.

“My audition couldn’t have gone any better, everything worked out really well,” he beams: “The response I got from the audience was simply fantastic. I never dreamed I’d get a standing ovation, it was such an amazing feeling.”

A musical prodigy from a young age, Julian has been playing the sax for over 20 years, but feels the time has come to step into the limelight and get some recognition for his considerable talent.

“I was very lucky because my dad was a music teacher, so I had the opportunity to try out lots of different instruments. I started off playing the clarinet which is similar to the saxophone, and then I went to music college to study the bassoon.

“During this period I was playing a lot of classical music on the bassoon, and the sax came about as a bit of light relief from the heavy stuff I was playing at college. Once I left college I started getting more and more into the sax… and the rest is history!”

Julian currently splits his time tutoring saxophonists and performing at private functions, but it is his dream to become a world famous musician headlining concerts all over the globe.

“I enjoy what I do at the moment but it’s human nature to want more. I’ve been playing instruments for many, many years, and Britain’s Got Talent is the only competition out there I can enter.

“My goal is to record albums and tour from country to country… to be like a British Kenny G. I’m hoping the show will give me a little step up the ladder, instead of spending my life playing in restaurants.”

The pressure is now on to reproduce the goods for the live semis, should he get that far… is this something that worries Julian?

“I’m not worried… yet! I’ll try and stick to playing tracks that people have heard of, but that’s easier said than done because not all songs work on the sax.”Industry Music Group Booking Agent

I suppose there’s no harm in working so hard, as long as the light at the end of the tunnel keeps getting brighter.
With the way the industry is so strung out right now, stratergising and work ethic are key skill sets in the agency business.
Cloning would also be a major plus point!
